Professor Bruno Merk

University of Liverpool

Bruno is currently holding a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies for advanced nuclear technologies on the project: iMAGINE – a Breakthrough Technology to Make More out of Spent Fuel. Imagine an advanced nuclear technology to turn the burden of spent fuel into an asset, energy without requiring expensive reprocessing technologies like currently applied in Sellafield. This innovative approach will reduce the waste challenge and create a tremendous net-zero energy resource for future generations.

From 2015 to 2020, he was holding the NNL/RAEng Research Chair in Computational Modelling for Nuclear Engineering and was NNL Laboratory Fellow for Physics of Nuclear Reactors. He was engaged in this time in several streams of the UK nuclear innovation programme supporting with his experience in academia as well as in industry and big research. Prior to moving to the UK, he was in a leading position in the Helmholtz nuclear research program NUSAFE, responsible for advanced reactor technologies and nuclear waste management. In addition he was advising the German Academy for Science and Technology in the topic nuclear waste management, providing political recommendations to support future planning and research programme development.
